Alice in Winter Wonderland
I have never been a fan of winter.
I suppose this makes me a terrible Canadian, considering 7 months out of our year is devoted to the blustery season. But never-the-less, it is true; winter and I are not friends. We’re more,… acquaintances that will stop politely to say hello in the grocery store, than when the awkward silence mounts, begin looking for a way to escape, only to run into them again in the next four aisles. So why I moved to the north pole, where winter not only lasts forever but also dumps 12 feet of snow on you at a time, I can’t actually put into words. But here I am!
It is February 4th and I am surrounded by drifts of snow that easily come up to my waist. (I feel like I should mention here, that I’m a tiny little girl. Little green men from Mars look down on me, so this isn’t a huge accomplishment for the snow drifts.) I, have, however, been informed by the locals that not only did the snow fall two months early, but has also accumulated more than average as well.
All of that complaining was just to say, for the past little while, I have been counting down days until spring. To help put ourselves into a spring time thaw mindset, we decided that now would be the perfect time to start a small indoor garden.
The kids and I picked up lots of different seeds from a local green house, and patiently planted each and everyone one into the dirt. It felt good to have dark soil underneath our fingernails again.
We planted kale, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and peppers. We bought a little LED grow light and placed it above them on our shelving unit. Spring isn’t here yet, but the smell of wet earth and the sight of sprouting greens is a pretty good start.
