GOATS!

homestead, pei, raising goats, milking goats,

Sometimes I wake up in the morning, I stare out at this view while I drink my coffee, and I still can’t entirely believe I’m here. It’s all just a dream that I left my home, friends and family and moved to a place where I can breathe the sea salt air.

It’s a dream. It must be.

The soil isn’t actually this red.

The sheep aren’t actually bleating just a few feet away.

Those aren’t chickens foraging on the dewy grass.

That sun isn’t rising and setting over the water. It’s just a dream.

And then, I open my eyes, and the view remains the same and I know it is real. I am here. And it’s exactly as amazing as I hoped it would be.

I write this today, on my birthday. The temperature has been up and down all week long and I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but instead of fishing (as we had originally planned) we got a call this morning saying our baby goats were ready for pick up!

So of course everyone happily got into the car to pick up our three Toggenburg goats. They’re young goats at the moment, but come the spring, these cute little ones will be providing us with fresh goat’s milk, yogurt and cheese. We’re all so excited to try milking for the first time.

Yes, we will all be first timers. (Stay tuned for what I am positive will be very entertaining stories!)

It will also be the very first time any of us have had goat’s milk!

You would think it would be wise for us to at least pick up a bag of goat’s milk from the grocery store to make sure we actually like goat’s milk before we go out and buy a goat, but that’s just not how we do things here.

Besides, look at these cuties, there’s no way I’m not going to like anything they produce.
