Ducks and Turkeys

Shortly after we started our chicken craze back in Ontario, we picked up some Pekin ducks.

You guys, ducks are way more fun than chickens. Period. Sure I like to watch my chickens foraging through my yard, but ducks.. ducks will follow you around like they think they’re little people. They will run up happily to eat out of your hand. If you should give them a pond big enough for them to dive in, they’ll happily play like a kid at an amusement park.

We also LOVE their eggs. Farm raised chicken eggs are absolutely delicious, but duck eggs have them beat. They do have more yolk-to-white ratio than a chicken egg, and so I’ve had many people shy away from them stating their cholesterol as reason to do so, but it’s packed full of good cholesterol, not bad. Eggs only become a problem when you eat them fried every day.

But I digress. After we moved here, we realized there were very few chicken and duck species readily available on the Island. We knew, however, that we wanted certain breeds back. Pekin ducks were definitely one of them. We looked high and low, until Dave finally put out a wanted ad on Facebook market place looking to see if we could find some, from somewhere.

To our surprise, the person who sold us our barred rock chickens and Americaunas replied. He had someone in New Brunswick who had some he was looking to sell, and he could arrange a time for them to drop them off to him, then we could pick them up at our leisure. Awesome.

We excitedly began planning for our ducks to join our homestead.

A few days before the ducks were due to arrive on the Island, we got a message from our new dealer asking if we were interested in some Turkeys.

Dave said he had better ask me. But let’s face it, you already know the answer.

Meet our newest additions, a Pekin trio, and a 5 gorgeous Beltsville small white Turkeys.

Apparently, we don’t know how to stop.
