Just call me the Chicken Lady
In Ontario we started our flock with Sexlinks.
Then we added Buff Orpingtons.
And once you add buff orpingtons, you realize that there are many different colours of orpingtons, so how do you stop at just one?
Of course you have to add black and lavender orpingtons to your flock.
And once you have lavender orpingtons, it’s apparently not a big leap to add ducks and Americaunas.
And now that you have all those egg laying breeds, you need some meat birds too. (Obviously) so off you head to the local hardware store to pick up 25, no 50, no 100 cornish crosses.
I mean, it’s only natural, right?
Isn’t this everyone’s experience with chicken rearing?
Here on the Island, we’ve been working towards reacquiring our flock. It began with 20 beautiful, pristine White rock chickens. After a rocky start, they’ve become fairly decent layers, but nothing like the orpingtons we had back in Ontario. They were daily layers, even through the winter. We missed that about our old breeds.
We also missed the bright blue eggs from the Americaunas. We missed the colourful feathers that would litter our lawn. We missed the quack of our ducks.
And so, without further ado… please meet the latest additions to our flock:
Just call me the crazy chicken lady.
